Description
The ABLE® Safety Cushion is a handheld shield for situations in which staff need immediate protection against blows, kicks, biting, or thrown objects.
Its soft construction protects the user without harming the person displaying challenging behaviour. Unlike a hard shield, the cushion doesn’t create an intimidating environment. The handles allow both vertical and horizontal use, and the cushion can be operated with one hand — leaving the other hand free to open doors or to communicate. The hygienic PVC surface wipes clean with disinfectant wipes.
The Safety Cushion is not a tool of force. It is designed to prevent injury — not to control the person in your care.

Frequently asked questions
What is the ABLE® Safety Cushion?
A CE-marked Category I PPE — a handheld soft shield designed to give staff immediate protection against blows, kicks, biting, and thrown objects.
Can the Cushion replace a hard shield?
Yes, in care, education, and supported-living settings. The Cushion is designed for environments where hard equipment would be inappropriate, intimidating, or could cause injury. It is not intended for use against edged or projectile weapons.
Can I use it one-handed?
Yes. The handles are positioned so the Cushion can be held with one hand, leaving the other hand free to open doors, use a radio, or communicate with the person in your care.
How do I clean the Cushion?
Wipe the PVC surface with a damp cloth and disinfect with a suitable wipe or spray. The surface is designed to be hygienic and easy to clean between uses.
Why is it called a cushion and not a shield?
Because the language matters. A “shield” implies confrontation. The Cushion is part of a low-arousal approach: it protects the wearer without escalating the situation or signalling aggression to the person in their care.
How does the Cushion reduce sickness absence?
By giving staff immediate, effective protection in acute situations, the Cushion helps prevent the bruises, sprains, and soft-tissue injuries that lead to time off work.
